I met Tory Johnson while speaking at one of her Spark and Hustle events last year in Phoenix. Her events provide tools, tips and inspiration to women entrepreneurs, and I was there to speak about time management for business success. Tory is the kind of person where you instantaneously feel like friends, and that’s why I wanted to write today about her new book, The Shift.

Mind over matter. Tory quickly learned that what she put in her head was far more important than what she put in her mouth—and with that determination she lost 60 pounds in just one year. She realized her biggest battle was in believing weight loss was possible and that she could do it. Tory discovered that you can be successful losing weight if you have the courage to take a hard look at yourself—what’s going on inside your head–and how that translates to your choices.
Make time for what’s important to you. “There’s always someone busier than you getting it done.” Tory kindly included the advice I shared with her in her book. And it’s so true. Forget life balance (it’s nonsense that sets you up for failure anyway) and make time for what’s important to you. Tory and I understand busy, but there really and truly are people busier than you who are getting their daily workouts logged in too. Remember, “I don’t have time” is just an excuse. How you spend your time is a reflection of what you value. So challenge yourself with never saying “I don’t have time,” again. Make time, you are worth it. As Tory says in her book: “Good food is oxygen. Exercise is oxygen. Self-care is oxygen. But we deny ourselves these essentials because we believe we don’t have the time.” Create the time. Your results will improve more about your life than just your health.
When your weight goes down, your confidence goes up. As Tory got happier with her choices and saw results on the scale, her confidence went up. She used her confidence to keep her weight loss journey going—even when it was tough. Remember, as she wrote in her book: “Each of us has the power to fix what is wrong.”
Tory’s story shows how just a small shift in your thinking can change everything for you. Today Tory’s new mantra is “You just have to suck it up.” She’s tough! I love it. And I hope Tory’s story inspires you to embark on your own weight loss journey.
